Oyo Chief Justice releases 59 inmates awaiting trial

The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Munta Abimbola, has released 59 (53 males and 6 females) out of the 903 inmates awaiting trial in Agodi Prison in Ibadan, Oyo State. The Chief Justice said this would ensure that congestion in the prison is reduced to its barest minimum. More importantly, some of those released were discovered to have been arrested unlawfully. Others had been detained for more than the number of years they would have spent in prison for the offences committed. Some of those released also had health challenges.

Many reportedly killed in Edo bank robbery this morning

Many people were killed after armed robbers struck a bank at Igarra, in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State this morning. Eyewitnesses say the robbers arrived the bank at about 6am, killed the security guard, carted away with money in the bank before engaging the police in a serious gun battle. Many people were left with bullet wounds after the robbers fired gunshots in the air in a bid to scare the police and residents of the area away. None of the robbers were arrested. The state police spokesman, Stanley Osifo confirmed the incident and said he and the state commissioner will work together to bring the papetrators to book.

Hundreds of supporters loyal to Assad have been locked cages by militant Islamists

Women & Men loyal to President Assad in a besieged region of Damascus are being paraded in metal cages in the hope of preventing further air- strikes raining down on a stricken suburb of the Syrian capital. Almost 500 Alawites have been rounded up by ISIS militants and are now being held captive in the cubed jails mounted on the back of flat-bed trucks and pick-ups. The locals see this extreme retaliation as the only way of ensuring the airborne attacks are ended.

According to sources in the state house, the closed door meeting between former president Goodluck Jonathan and President Buhari yesterday lasted for about 5 minutes. Jonathan is said to have arrived at the state house in a black SUV at exactly 2pm, went straight to the banquet hall where he met Buhari and came out 5 minutes later. He reportedly left the state house premises at exactly 2.07pm without talking to any journalists.

10 year old pupil escapes after she was abandoned in the bush by abductors

A 10-year-old pupil, Opeyemi Sotirin, escaped from her abductors, after she was abducted on Tuesday at her school in the Ibafo, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. The primary three pupil of Victory Edge Nursery and Primary School, was found loitering on the long bridge of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, after trekking from the bush where she was abandoned. She was said to have been picked up by a Quick Response Squad patrol team, led by one Inspector Ola Yahaya, who took her to the Warewa Police Post. The victim explained... She said, “After I closed from school at 2pm on my way home when I was suddenly taken away by two men but later abandoned in the bush and I started walking around looking for a way home.

NFF says they will not sack Siasia

Despite intense media speculation that national U-23 team coach, Samson Siasia would be sacked soon, a member of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ahmed Yusuf Fresh has informed that the football house has no intention of sacking the Olympic silver medal-winning coach. Speaking exclusively to Sports Vanguard yesterday, Yusuf said: “There has never been a time we in the technical committee or at the executive committee level discussed any such thing. I am a member of both committees and never has that come up for discussion."

Nigerian man sentenced to 30 years in prison for human trafficking in SA

Durban Regional Court on Tuesday, October 27, handed Emmanuel Uche Odii, a 30-year jail term for human trafficking. National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that the 32-year-old was handed the sentence following his conviction in August on two counts of human trafficking, two counts of kidnapping, one of rape, one of sexual assault, one of assault, one of running a brothel. His South African accomplice Bonginkosi Shange, 46, was handed a five year jail term for two human trafficking charges while his Nigerian accomplice, William Ojiaku, 30, was convicted.

Photo: 5 in-traffic armed robbers arrested in Lagos

The Lagos state police Rapid Response Squad have arrested five in-traffic robbers who specialized in snatching handsets and bags from unsuspecting members of public in traffic. The suspects identified as Ajala Lateef 16, Salami Sodiq, 15, Raji Kazeem, 19, Bashiru Adeyemi, 19, and Ikechukwu Ukueje, 15, were arrested on Wednesday October 28th after they had successfully robbed their victim of her belongings. Confirming the arrest, the commander of the RRS, Assistant Commissioner of Police , ACP Olatunji Disu, said that the policemen arrested the suspects during a special raid.

Dog finds an abandoned baby/foetus and takes it to safety

This is so amazing but biko, is that a foetus or a fully formed baby? Don't know where this happened but according to reports, this dog found the newly born baby and took it to where people could see it. The dog carried the baby in its mouth and amazingly didn't hurt the baby.

S’African women protest against Zuma ‘sex act’ painting

Robbery attack on Eko bridge

Cross Rivers state govt suspend morning devotion in primary and secondary schools, CAN reacts

The Cross Rivers state government has ordered the suspension of early morning devotions held in primary and secondary schools across the state. A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education in the state, Anne Odey, stated that the decision to suspend the devotion came from security concerns raised by the state Commissioner of Police, Henry Fadairo. She said the state police commission had suggested the suspension of the age long practice following the prevailing security concerns in the country. Court of Appeal dismisses Saraki's appeal

The Abuja division of the court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal filed by senate president, Bukola Saraki challenging his trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The appeal court dismissed all 5 issues raised by Saraki in the appeal. Two of the three panel of judges ruled that his appeal lacks merit. This implies that the Code of Conduct will still go ahead with Saraki's trial. Saraki is being tried on a 13 count charge of false asset declaration when he was Kwara state governor. He is expected to appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on November 5th.

BVN Deadline: 26m bank accounts to be frozen


With less than 1 day to the deadline for Bank Verification Number, BVN, about 26 million account holders still haven't registered to protect their money. The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has said no extension would be granted after the deadline expires and customers who still haven't registered will have no access to their money or any transaction in their account. According to CBN, the registration window will still be open after tomorrow, but unregistered customers will not be granted access to their accounts.

Two years after he was declared missing, Professor James Bolarinwa Olomo(pictured above) of the department of Nuclear And Medical Physics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife in Osun state is yet to be found. The University don left his home in Lagos on October 17, 2013, for a consultation job with an unidentified oil and gas company in Eket, Akwa Ibom and was last heard from on October 19th. His relatives and members of the OAU Academic Staff Union of Universities held a meeting in the school premises recently where they described the disappearance of the university don.

 Plateau state governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Jos, the state capital, yesterday upheld the election of the state governor, Simon Bako Lalong. The tribunal in its ruling, struck out the petition of Gyang Pwajok of the PDP, stating that the petition lacked merit and the petitioner failed to prove that the April 11th election that produced Lalong as governor was marred with election irregularities. The tribunal ordered the petitioner and his party, PDP to pay a fine of N50,000 to the governor, his party APC and INEC.
