Unknown gunmen shot Igbo businessman in Kano

Unknown gunmen have shot dead an Igbo businessman identified as Mr Ifeanyi in Sabongari area of Kano.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the incident occured on Saturday September 24th 2022 around 8:45pm at Azubros Plaza, off France Road, Sabongari Kano.

Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the area, fired at their target and zoomed off in a vehicle.

“It is clear they came to kill Mr Ifeanyi. He is a big battery dealer in Sabongari,” said a witness.

Please we all need be very careful with how we go about our daily encounters and off course our relationship with others for the days are very wicked.

The former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has replied the National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had, during his address at the presentation of a book titled, “Making Steady Sustainable Progress” authored by President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aides at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, accused his(Jonathan’s) administration of institutionalising corruption in Nigeria.

Dr. Jonathan, in his response to Tinubu’s claims that “So much money grew feet and ran away faster than Usain Bolt ever could and that his administration won gold medal in corruption, however said that facts have rather deserted the APC leader faster than Usain Bolt.
.
Puting Tinubu in proper perspectives, the former president who spoke through his former aide and bestselling author, Pastor Reno Omokri, said that under his administration, the only global body for monitoring corruption, Transparency International, had published in its annual corruption index, showing Nigeria made an eight(8) points improvement in corruption reduction, haven moved from 144 to 136 then.

The statement also said that, “other than media sensationalism, there have been no convictions of financial misappropriation stemming from the Jonathan era.”
.
The statement also challenged Tinubu or anybody in APC to counter Jonathan’s statement in 2014 that he has no bank account abroad.
.
Jonathan, in the statement said Tinubu mistook what he described as the “Usain Bolt speed” at which the current ruling APC government smuggled back into the country, the embattled former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team ( PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina whom the previous government under Jonathan had dismissed and declared wanted, only for the APC-led government to reinstate him, even with a promotion, for what he said is the “unproven claims of corruption under Jonathan.”
.
The statement reads thus:
“Again my attention has been drawn to disparaging comments made by Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu against former President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration.
.
In the said comments, Mr. Tinubu said “The prior government used the public treasury as a private hedge fund or a charity that limited its giving only to themselves,” he said.
.
“So much money grew feet and ran away faster than Usain Bolt ever could. That which could have been spent on national development was squandered in ways that would cause the devil to blush.”
.
Speaking further, the former Lagos State Governor said:
“Boko Haram would have taken more territory and more lives would have been lost to insurgency if Jonathan had remained in power.”
.
I would now address these allegations point by point using verifiable facts.
.
First of all, the only global body for monitoring corruption is Transparency International which releases an annual Corruption Perception Index.
.
It is a fact that Nigeria made her most improvement in Transparency International‘s annual Corruption Perception Index In 2014 under President Jonathan when we moved from 144 to 136 representing an improvement of 8 points.
.
Transparency International observed the Jonathan administration’s fight against the corruption in Nigeria’s fertilizer procurement regime, the use of technology to remove 50,000 Federal ghost workers and the speed at which the then President fired ministers accused of corruption or conflict of interests.
.
From that time till today, Nigeria has not made any improvements and has remained at 136 where Jonathan left us because Transparency International deals with facts, not opinions or media trial.
.
Other than media sensationalism, there have been no convictions of financial misappropriation stemming from the Jonathan era.
.
However, we do know that it is a fact that the allegedly corrupt pension thief, Abdulrasheed Maina, was dismissed and declared wanted by the Jonathan administration.
.
We also now know that it is a fact that the present Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, met with Maina in Dubai.
.
We know that Maina’s family revealed in a press conference that Maina was invited back to Nigeria by the present government. It is also a fact that Maina was recalled, reinstated and given double promotion by the current administration.
.
Moreover, we know from the Head of Service’s leaked memo that President Muhammadu Buhari was aware of this entire saga.
.
Perhaps Asiwaju Bola Tinubu mistook the Usain Bolt speed at which Maina was smuggled back into the country and reinstated for the unproven claims of corruption under Jonathan.
.
We also know that it is a fact that $25 billion worth of contracts were awarded at the NNPC without due process. It is also a fact that this is the highest ever such amount involved in Nigeria’s history.
.
Again, perhaps it is this amount that Tinubu meant when he said “So much money grew feet and ran away faster than Usain Bolt ever could”.
Or perhaps he was referring to Babachir Lawal.
or the MTN/Presidency N500m bribery scandals for which MTN Nigerian CEOs have being sacked.
.
Nigerians should note that on the 7th of March 2014, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad.”
.
Till date, nobody has been able to contradict that statement because it is true.
.
Can Bola Tinubu or anybody in the APC leadership make a similar claim?
.
On the issue of Boko Haram and terrorism, it is a fact that there is only one global body recognized to monitor terrorism and that is the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) which releases the annual Global Terrorism Index.
.
It is a fact that between 2013 and 2014, Nigeria under President Jonathan was unfortunately listed as the fourth most terrorized nation in the world.
.
However, in the latest Global Terrorism Index released yesterday (November 15, 2017) by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria has deteriorated from where Jonathan left it and is now the third most terrorized nation.
.
In 2015, President Jonathan ensured that elections held in every local government in Borno states, but last month, the United Nations declared that they could no longer operate in certain local governments of Borno state. So who is fooling who?
.
So if according to Transparency International, Nigeria was less corrupt under Jonathan than it is today and according to the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria is more terrorized today than it was under Jonathan, it becomes clear that Bola Tinubu has no factual basis to make the claims he made.

Access to President: Buhari’s powerful aides bar ministers, family, friends

Family members, friends and senior government officials who attempted to call or pay visits to President Muhammadu Buhari in the United Kingdom are having a difficult time getting access.

SUNDAY PUNCH can authoritatively report that four aides of the president control access to President Buhari, who is on extended medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

The aides are the President’s nephew, Mamman Daura; the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Domestic Affairs, Sarki Aba; Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; and Personal Assistant to the President; Tunde Sabiu.

Our correspondent learnt that anyone who wants to telephone or see the president in London must get the approval of one or more of the four aides. 

The only two individuals who are exempted from seeking permission to visit Buhari or call him are Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the First Lady is said not to be happy with the way the aides have been managing access to her husband. The first lady’s relationship with the president’s aides has not always been cordial..

 In October last year, Aisha granted a highly controversial interview to the British Broadcasting Corporation, in which she alleged that a cabal had hijacked her husband’s government.

According to a source in government, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Buhari’s wife had voiced her displeasure to close friends and associates that the cabal she complained about were still the ones in charge of her husband in London.

“The First Lady is not with him permanently in London, which should normally not be the case. She has had a few clashes with the cabal and she is not happy that they are also firmly in control in London. That’s why she goes and comes. She is not happy with the atmosphere over there.”

Sunday PUNCH gathered that these individuals have turned down numerous requests from the President’s friends, associates and members of his cabinet to see him.

Since Buhari extended his medical vacation on February 19, those who have visited him in his Abuja House residence in London include the Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun; Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Chief Bisi Akande; Ogun State Governor and Ibikunle Amosun.

It was gathered that the visits were initiated by the guests who made requests which had to be reviewed by the president’s aides. Daura was present during the Tinubu and Akande’s visit. Daura, who holds no political office in the present dispensation, has repeatedly been touted as the most powerful person in the present government, prompting Buhari to publicly declare late October 2016 that, “I’m in charge, not Mamman Daura.”

Daura travels with the president and is often seen with him. Daura is believed to belong to the legendary ‘Kaduna Mafia’, an influential group of young northern Nigerian intellectuals, civil servants, business tycoons and military officers residing or conducting business in the former northern capital city of Kaduna. The group reportedly influenced government policies during the military era and previous civilian administrations. Other famous members of the group were Adamu Ciroma, Ibrahim Tahir, Mahmud Tukur, and former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Adamu Ciroma; former Minister of Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Tahir; former Minister of Commerce and Industry during the Buhari-Idiagbon regime, Dr. Mahmud Tukur; former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki; former Head of the Technical Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, Hamza Zayyad; a former minister, Umaru Mutallab; former presidential aspirant and number-two man, General Shehu Yar’Adua; a former Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Ango Abdullahi; Professor Jibril Aminu and others.

Kyari is known to be one of the President’s closest aides. He plans Buhari’s schedules while ministers are said to queue in his office to see the President. Kyari’s influence became clear to many during a retreat organised by the presidency for the then ministers-designate. While declaring the retreat open on November 5, 2015, Buhari said, “In addition, all communications and appointments from you (ministers) to the Presidency should be routed through the Office of the Chief of Staff as it is the normal (procedure) in this presidential system.”

While much is not known about Sabiu, who was appointed shortly after Buhari’s election, he is reportedly related to Daura. Sources in government told our correspondent that the President ‘feels relaxed’ around him and has a lot of trust in him. The same was said of Aba, who was described as ‘quiet but one of the few people that can make anyone see the President.”

Presented with the names of the aides controlling access to the president, a source in the presidency confirmed the list. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the subject, said, “The names you have are accurate and they are the ones controlling access to the President in London, even in Nigeria. Some ministers, aides and service chiefs tried to talk to the President on the phone, but they turned them down.

“The few people that have seen the President only saw him because they agreed to it. If they didn’t, it would never have happened, apart from Governor Amosun, who everyone knows is one of Buhari’s best friends.”

XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS AGAINST NIGERIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA

A QUICK REMINDER TO NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT TO ACT SWIFTLY BEFORE IT SPILLS OUT HAND.

It’s no more a news to us that Nigerians are on daily basis now been attacked, brutalized, maimed and killed in South Africa under the guise of xenophobia.

“Xenophobia”, An intense dislike or fear of people from other countries. “Foreigners”.

This renewed anti-immigrant violence attacks by south Africans against Nigerians has left several properties, shops, homes, businesses and investments belonging to Nigerians worth millions of Naira destroyed with several others in their hundreds sent to their early graves.

The Nigerian community in South Africa are now living in pains, agonies and fear with the renewed ‘xenophobic’ attacks on non citizens especially Nigerians.

Despite all this, I’m saddened by the way the Nigerian government has been handling the horrible development. Since president Jacob Zuma seems not to care about the entire crisis. Without much ado, It’s high time the federal government of Nigeria act divisively to condemn in totally the senseless, brutal and reckless killings of Nigerians in South by taking harder stance against the country rather than mere media condemnation. It’s high time the Nigerian government wake up from their slumber by taking drastic measures and stand to rise in defense of her people.

The extrajudicial killing of the 34 year old Nigerian business man Tochukwu Nnadi by South African policemen on December 29 2016 is still fresh in our memory which brought to 20 the number of Nigerians resident in that country summarily dispatched to early graves without the benefit of trial as at last year December.

Tochukwu’s case is typical of the gory fate that confronts Nigerians among fellow Africans in the former Apartheid enclave. He was confronted by the police on allegations of drug peddling. By its own account, the Nigeria Union in the city of Pretoria quoting eyewitnesses, said the victim neither resisted arrest nor struggled with his captors. Yet, much like the way white American policemen brutalize African Americans, he was pummeled to the ground and choked to death.

However, The last weekend recent attacks on Nigerians in Pretoria west where their businesses, buildings were burnt seriously call for serious concern and must not be swept under carpet.

Over 120 Nigerians has been killed in the last two years. While 20 were killed last year alone. 640 Nigerians were also reported to have died from police brutality or in custody in South Africa.

Now our people are apparently living in fear of the unknown has they have promised more attacks in days to come. While Nigerians kept receiving threatening anonymous phone calls requesting that money be paid to avert destruction of their houses, businesses and properties.

This atrocities against Nigerians in South Africa demand a strong response from our government.
Our government should wake up from its treacherous slumber and demand justice for Nigerians wherever they are.

The resort to lynching of Nigerians by South Africans and their government’s inaction to act and curb the senseless unjust killings and brutalization of Nigerians in their country over unverified accusations and sheer hatred must stop immediately.

Though, Its xenophobia, also targets other African migrants attracted to its $323 billion economy, but Nigerians bear the brunt.

Nigerians, their businesses and homes are been attacked. Nigerians are been stoned, killed, stabbed with knives and falsefully dislodged from their residence and business shops without any concrete offense.

They call it ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ which was provoked by anti-immigrant rhetoric by the Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini, and President Jacob Zuma who separately suggested that immigrants were taking up and denying indigenes jobs.

And what should Nigerian government expect from a President who obviously initiated and of course in support of this killings?

Despite all this attacks that has sent several Nigerians in their hundreds to their early graves, yet the Nigerian government has been weak, vacillating and uncaring about the fate of its own citizens.

The time has come for Nigerian government to take a tough stance with South Africa whose leaders and people have not only failed to fully acknowledge Nigeria’s role during the days of their anti-Apartheid struggle.

This is the same country Nigerian government had spent billion of dollars to defend in the past. This is the same south Africa in the spirit of solidarity Nigeria boycotted several international competition in rise for her support and defense. This is the same Nigeria where Thabo Mbeki and Nelson Mandela would ran to in those days to hide and graciously welcomed by Nigerian Government.

They would sleep, relax and lodged in our government house with maximum hospitality and are subsequently been fed with Nigerian money.
Where’s history? (I think they should be reminded)

But rather to appreciate all this, South Africans are only compensating and treating us with disdain both at home and in Nigeria where South African businesses have been accused of maltreating their local employees.

We do not need to wait to simply retaliate like we did in 2012 when South Africa turned back an aeroplane with 125 passengers from Johannesburg airport on the flimsy allegation that their yellow fever inoculation cards were fake.

A reprisal against a South African jetliner and reminder of the country’s business interests in Nigeria calmed the haughty South Africans, prompting Zuma to come calling in Abuja.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry should take up the case of every Nigerian wrongfully killed or harassed in South Africa in the local courts.

Our High Commission should have a robust policy of keeping track of every Nigerian legally resident or visiting South Africa. There is the need to demand justice for the slain Nigerians by not only arresting and prosecuting their killers, but by paying adequate compensation to families of the victims. This is an irreducible minimum to ensure that justice is served.

We should let South Africans know that we need each other and Nigeria cannot be a junior partner in our bilateral relations. There are over 100 South African companies doing thriving business in Nigeria, some, like MTN, Shoprite, MultiChoice (DSTV/GOTV), Stanbic and South African Breweries, are very good examples.

Nigerians run many small business and service outlets also in South Africa. In 2012, 73,282 Nigerian tourists visited South Africa, contributing 720 million rand to its economy while Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote is investing $3.7 billion in cement production in the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, has been unimpressive. He needs not wait for the President to instruct him before forcefully taking up the case of any Nigerian ill-treated or murdered in any country.

Institutions should be made to work. He should act decisively today. Our foreign missions should exist to promote the country and its nationals’ interest, not to fatten officials. This is the standard practice in international relations. Our South African mission needs a shake-up as so many Nigerians have suffered on its watch.

Our government must however fulfil its responsibility to Nigerians by engaging in furious diplomatic activity to get justice for Tochukwu and every other Nigerian victim of South Africa’s xenophobia/extra judicial killings and random murder.

1. Ojota
Ojota used to be a military settlement in the late 18th century and soldiers practised their shooting there. The area had several gun firing spots and became known as “Oju Ota” in Yoruba which means “Bullet spots”. It later metamorphosed into Ojota which it is called now.

This area is on the outskirts of Lagos and got its name from the early settlers who were Egba people from Abeokuta. The area was first called “Abule awon egba” in Yoruba, which means “Village of Egba people”. It later became “Abule Egba”.

3. Apongbon
Apongbon is one of Lagos’ most popular markets, and it’s also quite close to the popular Oke-Arin market. It got its name from the then acting governor of the Lagos colony, William McCoskry, who had a Red Beard. The Yorubas who couldn’t pronounce the colonial governor’s name decided to describe him by his red beard and started calling him “Oyinbo to pon ni igbon” meaning a red-bearded man. It later became Apongbon.

Magodo is now a posh area, but in the past, it used to be sacred land. The residents had a lot of taboos and one of them was to avoid using mortars and pestles, “Ma gun odo” which means “Don’t pound it”. It later became ‘Magodo

Epe is named after the early settlers who were Epe traders. The area became dominated by the Epes and they still trade there until today.

6. Ebute-Metta
Ebute-Metta is one of the earliest harbour docks where British ships berthed at. It was a hub for trade and commerce in colonial times. Ebute-Metta is a fusion of the words “Ebute” which means the seaside in Yoruba, and “Metta” which means three.

Broad street used to be one of the longest and widest streets in the city. It got its name from its broadness.

8. Agidingbi
The British Naval forces invaded Lagos in 1885 under the pretext of stopping slavery and human sacrifice. The noise their canon made was really loud, and the sound was heard round the streets of Lagos Island. The people described the sound as “A gb din gbinnn”. Which means a loud groundbreaking noise. The name Agidingbi was borne out of this.

Victoria Island was also a major hub for commerce and British ships berthed there often. It’s named after Queen Victoria of England who was Queen from 1837-1901.

Ikeja, the capital of Lagos, is actually an abbreviation for “Ikorodu And Epe Joint Administration”. It was coined by the colonial masters for ease of administration.

BREAKING : Buhari Is Not Coming Back!!!, By Toyin Dawodu

There is a saying in Yoruba Land: “Orun a re mabo.”

Translation: No one comes back from the dead.

Buhari may not be dead, but he might as well be – too sick to rule, too greedy to leave.

Do I wish Buhari dead? Hell no! I wish him well. But as the president of Nigeria, he needs to either serve in his full capacity as president, or immediately resign. There is no third option here, at least not one that benefits Nigerians.

For weeks, Buhari’s administration has been reporting that he is healthy, that he is simply on an extended trip to London for medical tests. He has been away for weeks, and his administration is unwilling or unable to tell Nigerians if or when their president will return, according to the LA Times.

So, what we know for sure is even if Buhari is not sick – which is improbable, considering his appearance of late – and he is just more comfortable spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on his current medical tour instead of getting these “medical tests” done at the State House Clinic Abuja, the fact remains he so  preoccupied with his health that he is unable to lead his country. And Nigeria does not seem to have another leader poised to take his place.

I agree with Okey Ndibe that Buhari should step down.

Unlike most of Buhari’s detractors, I do not have a self-serving agenda. My agenda is to see Nigerians prosper in Nigeria. But Nigerians remain in chains, enslaved by their inability to see beyond their greedy noses.

I speculate Buhari is suffering from either a kidney failure or pancreatic cancer, but even if Buhari comes back home, we all know his policies of the last two years have left the country almost completely stagnate. Try as we might to put our faith in him, Buhari has brought Nigeria no closer to self-sufficiency.

If you remember, I campaigned for Buhari. I wanted him to help halt the abyss to which Nigeria was descending during the time of Jonathan’s presidency, as referenced in my article Nigeria’s Rise to the Bottom.

In another one of my articles, I stated that Nigeria is Not a Country but a conspiracy of the elites. My sincere hope was that Buhari would mark the start of a new paradigm of leadership for Nigeria.

That has not been the case.

I am not naive in thinking any world leader would panic his or her constituents by announcing a major illness then admitting there is no cure for the illness, nor a plan in place to ensure the stability of the country going forward. World leaders don’t do that. Hell, C-level executives don’t even do that.

I think what we all feel is the sense of unease that manifests when you know something’s wrong and no one will tell you what it is. It’s the same unease Americans felt when William Henry Harrison died in office. It’s the same unease experienced by Ethiopians when Prime Minister Meles Zenawi died in office. It’s the same unease the whole world felt when North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il died and we realized we were stuck with his sons.

The saga of Yar’adua comes to mind. Not quite seven years ago, we had another Nigerian President lying comatose in another country. The cabals lied to the nation for several months until they could no longer lie.

This may be history repeating itself.

By the time this post goes live, Buhari may be dead or Buhari may be back in Nigeria. But I question whether he will ever regain enough strength to lead in the proper capacity as president. How can he have a broken body and a distracted mind and retain the strength and focus to lead Nigeria out of social, political, and economic turmoil?

I am hedging my bets. The cabals know the answer. The conspirators know the answer. But they will continue to lie and  keep Nigerians guessing so they can milk the system for as long as possible.

Therefore, I say to all Nigerians, let us pray the Lord see fit to restore President Buhari’s health, and that he has the opportunity to enjoy the rest of his years in peace with his family beside him.

And let us pray that Nigerians would wake up, and rise up. Long live Nigeria.

allegedly stabbing Moses Ayemi and his wife Jovita
Ayemi with broken bottle 10 times.

The
couple were stabbed for allegedly accusing the suspects of
pouring urine on their doorstep at their Lekki
Phase 1 house, were they all reside. The victims were rushed to the
hospital for treatment.

The
suspects were charged on a two-count charge of felony, to
wit: inflicting injury occasioning bodily harm, offences punishable
under
sections 409 and 244 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011. Police
prosecutor, Sergeant T. O. Tubi said the complainants told the police
that they warned the suspects not
to pour urine on their doorstep but they failed to heed the warning.

The
suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge in the open court and the
magistrate, Mrs. O. M. Ajayi admitted them on bail in the sum of N50,000
each with two sureties each in like sum. Ajayi adjourned the case till 28 November, 2016.
